Listening Party: 7/20/1998

Monday, 07/20/1998 Ventura County Fairgrounds, Ventura, CA

Set 1: Bathtub Gin, Dirt, Poor Heart, Lawn Boy, My Sweet One, Birds of a Feather, Theme From the Bottom, Water in the Sky, The Moma Dance, Split Open and Melt

Set 2: Drowned -> Makisupa Policeman> Maze, Sea and Sand, Prince Caspian > Harry Hood

Encore: Sexual Healing > Hold Your Head Up, Halley's Comet

Notes: Poor Heart featured several false endings, including a Free Bird-style ending. Makisupa included a long, atypical jam. Sea and Sand (first since NYE 1995, or 166 shows) was an appropriate choice, given the venue’s location near the beach. Sexual Healing made its Phish debut at this show with Fishman reading the lyrics off the back of a show poster. As delay loops built to end Halley’s Comet, the band left the stage one by one.

  1. This gin is a keeper, for sure. For a second I thought I might like it more than Riverport', just for a second, though...still think I like Riverport more. Maybe it's just because there is a soundboard of the Riverport one, though.

I was on the fence about making this Halley's a highlight, too. I might check it out again.

  2. Checked out Halley's again...while a great encore, no doubt, I am still not convinced it was all that amazing in the grand scheme of things. I liked the other highlights mentioned much more.

  3. The coolest part about the Gin was Trey bringing the theme back around again. He starts playing fragments in an almost cryptic fashion at first. Then he plays the whole melody but in triplets. The three over two rhythmic tension makes it quite a nice release when he shifts to the straight ahead melody. Very cool stuff.

And the Poor Heart ending was worth the entire download all by itself. The Freebird ending is just priceless.

Thanks again for the listening party idea.
