Spreadsheet Updates - 12/02/2010

I have decided to make a slight change to what content will be posted on the side projects tabs. Instead of it including sit-ins for each band member, I will just be posting actual side projects of each of the four members. Since the Phish Rare Material spreadsheet has way more "sit-in" recordings than I do, I figured I wouldn't even bother attempting to get them all only repost what's already available. I will, however, continue to post all the "true" side project shows that I already have.

The few exceptions to this rule will be found on Fish's page. I will be including his "sit ins" with Jazz Mandolin Project, Yonder Mountain String Band and Marco Bennevento Trio. In my opinion, you could argue that these were side projects for him.

I'm starting to add what side project recordings I have to The Spreadsheet, begining with Trey. I have quite a few Live Phish releases that can't be posted, but I will upload everything else that I have (close to 300 shows) and update it as i get new recordings. I tried to keep this list to actual side projects, but also included sit-ins if one of the band members played for a good portion of the show. If you notice something missing (or something that should be removed) from my list, even if a recording of it doesn't exist, please feel free to email me at hoydog23@gmail.com to let me know.

Listening Party: 10/31/1995

Tuesday, 10/31/1995 Rosemont Horizon, Rosemont, IL

Set 1: Icculus, The Divided Sky, Wilson, Ya Mar, Sparkle, Free, Guyute, Run Like an Antelope, Harpua

Set 2: I Am the Sea, The Real Me, Quadrophenia, Cut My Hair, The Punk Meets the Godfather, I'm One, The Dirty Jobs, Helpless Dancer, Is It In My Head?, I've Had Enough, 5:15, Sea and Sand, Drowned, Bell Boy, Doctor Jimmy, The Rock, Love, Reign O'er Me

Set 3: You Enjoy Myself, Jesus Just Left Chicago, A Day in the Life, Suzy Greenberg

Encore: My Generation

Notes: Harpua included a story from Mike about a dream about raccoons. The Michael Jackson references continued, as Trey teased the audience by saying that Jimmy was listening to the Halloween album while the band played a Beat It tease. Also, the second set was preceded by a Thriller tease. The second set "musical costume" was The Who's Quadrophenia and was performed with Dave Grippo on alto saxophone, Don Glasgo on trombone, Joey Sommerville on trumpet and Alan Parshley on French horn. During Bell Boy, crew member Leigh Fordham, clad in a bell boy outfit, sang Keith Moon’s original part. All of the Quadrophenia songs, as well as My Generation, were Phish debuts. YEM was almost 40 minutes long and was preceded by the audience chess move. The chosen fan, dressed as a Wookie, cracked under the pressure and could not choose a move on stage, prompting a quote from Fish that “Wookies can’t play chess.” Jesus Just Left Chicago featured Grippo on alto saxophone; Suzy Greenberg featured Grippo, Glasgo and Somerville. My Generation was performed acoustic. Before My Generation, the crew set up a Keith Moon replica drum set on stage. After the song, Fishman and Trey destroyed the drum set a la The Who. Finally, a stagehand brought out a large plunger. Trey pressed it and set off a huge explosion backstage. This show was officially released as Live Phish 14.

Listening Party: October '95

The next installment of the Listening Party will be October '95...well, technically it will include the first 4 shows of the Fall Tour (9/27-9/30), as well, since they wouldn't fit into any other tour or month in Phish history.

Details
Show Dates: 9/27/1995 through 10/31/1995
Tour: Fall, 1995
Show Count: 25 shows

I will post the first show tomorrow morning. In the meantime, enjoy the July '98 Compilation in the previous post (a direct link to the mediafire folder can be found on the left hand side of the home page, as well).

Notes: This is a compilation of my top highlights from July '98 (U.S. Tour) and is set up as on LONG show (clocking in at about 5 hrs 30 min) separated into 2 sets. Songs are placed in the set that they were originally played. Each song fades seamlessly (or as close as I could get it) into the next.

Listening Party: 7/20/1998

Monday, 07/20/1998 Ventura County Fairgrounds, Ventura, CA

Set 1: Bathtub Gin, Dirt, Poor Heart, Lawn Boy, My Sweet One, Birds of a Feather, Theme From the Bottom, Water in the Sky, The Moma Dance, Split Open and Melt

Set 2: Drowned -> Makisupa Policeman> Maze, Sea and Sand, Prince Caspian > Harry Hood

Encore: Sexual Healing > Hold Your Head Up, Halley's Comet

Notes: Poor Heart featured several false endings, including a Free Bird-style ending. Makisupa included a long, atypical jam. Sea and Sand (first since NYE 1995, or 166 shows) was an appropriate choice, given the venue’s location near the beach. Sexual Healing made its Phish debut at this show with Fishman reading the lyrics off the back of a show poster. As delay loops built to end Halley’s Comet, the band left the stage one by one.

And another thing...

Now that I think about this a little more, I've come up with a secondary use for the blog, as well. A while ago, my brother and I decided to start picking entire tours or months in Phish history and listening to them straight through. We started with Fall 97 then moved to August 93 (both no-brainers). We've now just started Summer 98 (US Tour). Anyways, as we started telling friends about this, a lot of people joined the party. Now, we have a good chunk of people listening and we all shoot emails back and forth about highlights, song selection, etc. Very similar to the emails we all share as the band is on the road.

So...I thought, why not include everyone in this listening party? I thought that I could post a show per day (or every other day) and have everyone able to join in and post comments about their thoughts.

Let me know what you think?

Welcome to THE SPREADSHEET blog!

I thought it might be time for me to create a blog for THE SPREADSHEET. I will be posting the updates here, as well as making random comments about shows/jams I have been listening to recently. Please feel free to use this a a forum to comment about anything relating to the spreadsheet, including better sources available, soundboards that have not been posted, etc.

Hope you enjoy!
